Happy Mother's Day - a little late

I wrote this prior to leaving for Smithers. Thought about editing but.....

Happy Mother's Day! I hope everyone has a fabulous day! My daughter took me to Jurassic Park 3D! Yeah! I am so up for this. (It did not disappoint, loved it!!!)

Kelly's quilt is done! One corner left to hand sew (Now all done and not washed!!!). Then into the wash tonight (I am torn about washing, I know some of my quilts are out there a long time prior to being washed. Scrunchy goodness versus crispy sleek newness. It's a dilemma. Lately I have been wondering about the chemicals in the fabric. Any thoughts on this?)

I did straight line quilting cause I love it. Still not sure how all the green snuck into my turquoise and red quilt, but I love it. Reminds me of growing things.

On the back I used the remnants of the wasteful tree blocks! Love the back! A big thank you to Robyn who kept me motivated and sewing to get this quilt done!!! She did most of the piecing on the back.

I am going to have to carry this quilt onto the plane as it weighs a ton. It is for my Marsha Stewart daughter so will have to wrap accordingly. Note to self - get bag, bows and ribbon! And a card! I am sooo pleased I finished this on time.

Quilt dimensions: 66 x 82

Kelly's birthday placemats - four done, two to hand bind! I can always finish them up there, after all they were due in March.

During the Sew Mama Sew give aways rebecca of http://sewfestivehandmade.blogspot.ca/ asked how you get sewing done if you work full time. Snapped a picture of my table!

On the sewing machine is the last square for my 2nd brothers quilt, Morgan's birthday quilt, Nevermore, Jordan's birthday quilt, Salt Water, and a new star quilt that I saw on Faith's blog at http://www.freshlemonsquilts.com/. Bought the pattern and have started cutting out two quilts.

So Happy Mother's Day to me! Doing what I love! Off to make my May Bee Blocks.

  1. The tree quilt turned out beautifully!

As for fabric washing, I don't prewash very often but I stick to the high-quality cottons for the most part. If the fabric is different or from an unknown source, then I might prewash. If the quilt is a gift, I usually wash it before I give it so that I can spot any problems with bleeding, or seam issues, or shrinking, before I hand it over. Otherwise, if they wash it and it tears, they might think I'm a crappy quilter OR think they're a lousy quilt-owner and be too afraid to tell me.

Quilts for me depend on what it's for. Show quilts aren't supposed to be washed or so I've heard. But who knows...

  3. Great bright quilt. I'm all for washing bed quilts before use/give away. Of course, I also wash the fabric before it even gets into a bed quilt, to remove sizing, and get it to shrink and or bleed if that's what it's going to do -- before it's asked to play nicely with other fabric. :-)

  4. Wonderful quilt, and great organization - you don't have cats, right?
As for the pre-wash question: the chemicals in new fabric are hard on my hands and cause headaches, so I learned to wash everything before it comes into my studio. Also: that stuff is often quite dirty, check the wash water sometime .....
